Summer heat increases risks of ear infections and nosebleeds

Medical experts are warning of increased health risks associated with high summer temperatures, specifically regarding ear and nose health.

Ear, Nose, and Throat specialist Dr. Ecem Sevim Akı noted a significant rise in external ear canal infections, commonly known as swimmer's ear, during the summer. Key causes include poor pool hygiene and leaving ears wet for extended periods. Dr. Akı also cautioned against the improper use of cotton swabs, which can push earwax deeper into the canal instead of removing it.

Additionally, Dr. Mustafa Kemal Olgun from Medline Adana Hospital highlighted an increased risk of nosebleeds due to dehydration in hot weather. High temperatures and sweating can dry out nasal tissues, weakening blood vessels and making them prone to cracking. While heat is a factor, other causes such as high blood pressure, allergies, or medication use should also be considered. Experts recommend maintaining adequate fluid intake and using nasal moisturizers to mitigate these risks.
