Summer heat management: Tips for ventilation and cooling

During summer months, improper ventilation in cool basements can lead to mold growth. Because warm outdoor air contains more moisture than cool basement air, condensation can form on walls, floors, and ceilings as the air cools. To prevent damage to stored items and structural issues, it is recommended to ventilate only when outdoor temperatures are lower than indoor temperatures, use short bursts of ventilation rather than continuous airflow, and monitor humidity with a hygrometer.

In cases of extreme heat where nighttime temperatures remain high, electric dehumidifiers may be necessary. To manage energy costs, users are advised to select energy-efficient models or utilize solar power from photovoltaic systems.

Regarding indoor cooling, fans do not lower room temperature but provide relief through airflow. The effectiveness of a fan depends on its type and placement. Table fans are suitable for short distances, pedestal fans offer strong airflow, and tower fans save space while distributing air vertically. Utilizing oscillation functions can help circulate air more evenly throughout a room.
