Summer panettone becomes a seasonal tradition in Versilia

The tradition of eating panettone during the summer has become a significant culinary trend in Italy, particularly in the Versilia region. Originally introduced as a provocation by food journalist Davide Paolini approximately fifteen years ago, the practice of consuming the traditional Italian sweet during the August holidays has evolved into a widespread custom.

Unlike the heavy, candied fruit versions typically enjoyed during Christmas, summer panettone features lighter, fresher ingredients such as peach, apricot, pineapple, lemon, or forest fruits. This seasonal adaptation has led major confectionery companies and local businesses to adjust their offerings. For instance, the historic Sienese company Fiore 1827 has developed specific summer versions, and the company Olivieri 1882 in Veneto continues to produce the specialty.

In Forte dei Marmi, the trend is integrated into local summer rituals, including being served in restaurants and at beach clubs, often paired with gelato. The tradition is also marked by cultural events, such as a sunrise concert on the pier organized by the municipality, where summer panettone is served to attendees.
