Libraries Across North Carolina and the Midwest Launch Summer Reading Programs

Public libraries in Chatham County, North Carolina, and several Midwestern towns—including Chelsea, Dexter, Milan and Saline, Michigan—have opened their 2026 summer reading programs. The initiatives run from early June through August and use the “Unearth a Story” theme, offering children, teens and adults a variety of activities such as storytimes, dinosaur crafts, emergency‑vehicle tours, art projects, and prize‑drawing incentives. Participants who complete reading or activity goals can earn free books, treats, or entry into grand‑prize contests.

Chatham County’s program invites youth ages 2‑18 to log at least ten reading hours or activities for a free book and a chance at a grand prize. In the Midwest, each library tailors events to its community—Chelsea hosts a dinosaur‑themed kickoff with a therapy dog, Dexter features an emergency‑vehicle day and shipwreck talks, while Milan offers “Touch a Truck” and intergenerational art sessions. Registration is free and open to all ages, with many events held on library lawns, community parks and partner venues.
