Summer Refreshment Tips: Salted Watermelon and Mojito Recipes

A simple culinary trick used in Turkey, Mexico and parts of the United States adds a pinch of salt and a few drops of lemon or lime juice to watermelon slices. The salt does not increase the fruit’s sugar content but heightens the perception of sweetness, while the citrus adds a contrasting bright note.

For those preferring a drink, the classic Cuban mojito combines white rum, fresh lime juice, mint leaves, brown sugar and sparkling water. The preparation calls for muddling lime and sugar, gently bruising mint, then mixing with rum, ice and soda. A non‑alcoholic version omits the rum and can be enhanced with apple juice or lemonade.
