Summer safety guides highlight pool and lightning hazards
Health experts advise several precautions for safe swimming during the summer. Bathers should shower before entering a pool to remove sweat, sunscreen and cosmetics that can react with chlorine, avoid glass containers near the water, never leave children unattended, refrain from swimming when ill or with open wounds, and enter shallow areas feet‑first to prevent head or spinal injuries.
During thunderstorms, the advice is to seek a closed, lightning‑protected building and avoid high or exposed spots. If shelter is unavailable, people should crouch low, keep metal objects and tools away, maintain a minimum 5‑metre distance from others, stay out of water, away from trees and other tall objects, and avoid standing on elevated terrain.
