Summer vacation sleep troubles and burnout tips for parents

Vacation can disrupt sleep for many people. Changes in bedding, room temperature, noise, and altered daily rhythms may make it harder to fall asleep, especially for those already prone to insomnia. The lack of routine and new environments can cause the brain to stay more active at night, leading to restless nights and daytime fatigue.

Neuroscientist Amy Brann explains that the brain’s prefrontal cortex and amygdala react strongly to the loss of predictable schedules during the summer break. She offers five evidence‑based suggestions to prevent a summer burnout: simplify weekly plans, maintain daily rituals, limit on‑the‑spot decisions, engage in regular physical activity, and verbalize feelings of overwhelm. These strategies aim to lower cortisol, support emotional regulation, and help the brain adjust to the holiday’s changing pace.
