Summerland building permits drop following Bald Range wildfire
Building permit activity in Summerland dropped significantly in August following the devastating Bald Range wildfire. The development services department issued only four permits during the month, totaling a construction value of $506,700.
Bobby Williamson, manager of development services, reported that the decline was due to the community-wide evacuation caused by the wildfire. The fire consumed 25,163.2 hectares and destroyed approximately 150 structures, including 40 within Summerland. Evacuation orders had been in place since August 7.
Activity appears to be recovering in September. Between September 1 and September 15, the municipality issued eight building permits with a combined value of $3,103,640.
