Summerland RCMP reports slight declines in violent and property crime in Q1 2026
The Summerland RCMP detachment presented its first‑quarter 2026 policing statistics at the town council meeting on July 28. Police received 440 calls for service, a 10 percent increase from the 400 calls recorded in the same period of 2025. Violent crime incidents fell to 15, down from 16 the previous year, while property crime incidents dropped to 42 from 46.
Some categories showed mixed trends: assault calls rose to eight from two, and intimate‑partner violence calls increased from one to five. Break‑and‑enter incidents in vacant homes also rose, whereas fraud reports fell from 12 to six. The RCMP continues to warn seniors about scams that impersonate family members and is conducting public education sessions.
Speeding on Highway 97 through Trout Creek and on Prairie Valley Road remains a concern; the detachment has installed reader boards and increased patrols, though the terrain makes monitoring challenging. Four new officers will join the force, leaving the unit still one officer short of a full complement. Community initiatives such as Citizens on Patrol and suicide‑prevention planning are also being pursued.
