Summerland wildfires force evacuations and threaten water plant FAST-MOVING

A wildfire is burning out of control at the Summerland landfill, creating a separate incident from the ongoing Bald Range wildfire. The landfill blaze is located approximately 1.5 km from the Summerland water treatment plant, which officials are closely monitoring to ensure no disruption to water activities. The fire has caused worsening air quality in the immediate area and has led to the closure of Highway 97 between Penticton and Peachland.

The Bald Range wildfire, which ignited on August 7, has expanded to over 17,000 hectares and resulted in the evacuation of more than 10,000 people. The BC RCMP is currently investigating the cause of the Bald Range fire as a criminal matter.

Summerland Mayor Doug Holmes stated that the volatility of the fires makes it unsafe for evacuees to return home. While utility work continues and some power has been restored, officials emphasize that re-entry is not possible until the situation is under control. The Summerland Fire Department and crews from other jurisdictions are managing the landfill blaze, as the BC Wildfire Service focuses on wildland fire expertise.
