Bald Range wildfire causes significant destruction in Summerland FAST-MOVING
The Bald Range wildfire in British Columbia has grown to 21,391 hectares, causing significant destruction and forcing mass evacuations. Officials report that approximately 150 structures have been damaged or destroyed, with about 40 of those located within the district of Summerland. While many residents are beginning to return to areas like Trout Creek, others remain under evacuation orders or alerts.
The fire has caused severe economic impact, particularly in the agricultural sector. One local farmer reported losing 70 to 80 per cent of his peach crop. In response, a community-led initiative called #SummerlandStrong has been launched by Wine Growers British Columbia, the BC Restaurants and Food Services Association, and other industry groups. The movement encourages residents across the province to support local Summerland producers by purchasing their wines and products.
Emergency Management Minister Kelly Greene noted that while some evacuation orders have been downgraded, the province remains on high alert with 126 active fires. The rapid spread of the Bald Range blaze has prompted Premier David Eby to call for a review of wildfire preparedness, suggesting the speed of such fires may represent a ‘new normal’ for the region.
