Summerland begins recovery following Bald Range wildfire
Recovery efforts are underway in Summerland, British Columbia, following the Bald Range wildfire that began on August 7. The blaze resulted in the evacuation of approximately 20,000 people and caused damage to roughly 40 structures within Summerland and 150 structures in surrounding areas.
As residents return, the Summerland Food Bank and Resource Centre reports an increasing need for assistance. Many households lost food supplies due to power outages during the fire. While non-perishable donations have arrived from out of province, the facility has expressed a growing need for cash donations to better manage resources.
In terms of fire management, the BC Wildfire Service reports that the immediate threat to structures has passed, allowing for the demobilization of protection equipment. However, several evacuation orders and alerts remain in place. Meanwhile, the Penticton evacuation reception centre is scheduled to close as recovery shifts toward case management.
Local businesses are also beginning to reopen. The Summerland Waterfront Resort and Spa is set to resume operations on August 28, following a period of closure to accommodate evacuees and firefighting personnel. Additionally, pet stores in South Surrey and White Rock have launched donation drives to support displaced animals and their owners.
