Summit County Sheriff’s Office reports search rescues and shelter staffing issues

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office has reported a series of recent incidents, including multiple search and rescue operations in the Uinta Mountains. Volunteers assisted injured and missing hikers near the Highline Trail and Henrys Fork Trail, as well as a group in the Ruth Lake area. Additionally, deputies responded to a multi-vehicle crash involving three semi-trucks on Interstate 80 and arrested an individual for felony drug possession after discovering fentanyl in a vehicle.

Separately, the Summit County Animal Shelter is facing staffing shortages and an ongoing internal personnel investigation. The shelter is currently operating without four technicians and one administrative assistant, representing over a third of its regular staff. While public hours have been reduced, officials state that animals are receiving consistent care through the efforts of remaining employees and volunteers.
