Sumo wrestler Mitonoumi becomes first from Okinawa to reach Sanyaku rank

The Japan Sumo Association has announced the new rankings for the upcoming Kyushu Basho, confirming that Mitonoumi has been promoted to the rank of Komusubi. This achievement marks the first time a sumo wrestler from Okinawa Prefecture has reached the Sanyaku ranks, filling a historical gap as Okinawa was the only one of Japan's 47 prefectures without a Sanyaku-level wrestler.

Mitonoumi, 33, achieved this promotion following a strong performance in the previous tournament where he secured 10 wins and 5 losses. His ascent to the rank of Komusubi at 63 tournaments since his debut is the slowest promotion for a former student sumo wrestler in history. Additionally, his promotion at age 33 is the fourth oldest recorded in the post-war era.

Originally from Uruma City, Mitonoumi expressed his desire to serve as an inspiration for young sumo practitioners in Okinawa. He intends to focus on delivering results during the Kyushu tournament held at the Fukuoka International Center.
