Japanese baseball players Akira Nakamura and Kazuki Hirano retire
Several prominent Japanese professional baseball players concluded their careers this week. Akira Nakamura, a long-time infielder for the SoftBank Hawks, played his final game against the Orix Buffaloes. In a celebratory atmosphere, the Hawks' lineup recorded 21 hits to secure a 12-5 victory. Nakamura, who recorded 1,522 career hits and won four consecutive Golden Glove awards as a first baseman, expressed his desire to support the team from behind the scenes in the future.
Orix Buffaloes pitcher Kazuki Hirano also held his retirement ceremony during a game against SoftBank. Catcher Kenya Wakatsuki, who played many seasons alongside Hirano, paid tribute to the veteran closer, noting that mastering Hirano’s forkball was a turning point in his own development as a professional catcher. Hirano retires with 250 career saves across Japan and the United States.
