Sumter County selected for Alex Murdaugh murder retrial
A South Carolina judge has designated Sumter County as the new location for the retrial of Alex Murdaugh, who is accused of killing his wife and son. Judge Debra McCaslin ruled that the retrial cannot occur in the 14th Circuit, specifically Colleton County, because Murdaugh would be unable to receive a fair and impartial trial there.
McCaslin noted that Sumter County is best suited for the proceedings due to its security measures, courtroom facilities, and technological infrastructure. The retrial is scheduled to begin on April 5, 2027.
The South Carolina Supreme Court previously overturned Murdaugh’s 2023 murder convictions, citing “shocking jury interference” by a court clerk during the original trial. While Murdaugh denies the murders, he remains in prison after pleading guilty to separate financial crimes, for which he received state and federal sentences totaling 67 years.
