Sun exposure linked to rising skin‑cancer and tinnitus risks

Miriam Staunton, a 53‑year‑old melanoma survivor from Dublin, warned Irish people to avoid sun exposure during the current heatwave. Diagnosed with advanced melanoma at age 45, she now follows strict sun‑safety measures and urges the public to wear hats, use SPF 30+ sunscreen, cover up, seek shade and stay hydrated. She stresses that even cloudy days can cause UV damage and that early detection of skin changes saves lives.

In the United Kingdom, audiologist Kayleigh Waters of Boots Hearing Care highlighted research suggesting that severe sunburn can exacerbate or trigger tinnitus. She explained that inflammation, dehydration and disrupted inner‑ear fluid balance caused by intense UV exposure may worsen the ringing‑in‑the‑ears condition that affects about one in ten people. Waters recommends increased fluid intake, regular sunscreen use, and protective clothing to minimise both skin‑cancer and ear‑health risks.

Health officials in both countries emphasise the importance of daily sunscreen use, especially between March and October, and advise limiting time in direct sunlight during peak hours.
