Sun exposure management and sunburn prevention
Managing sun exposure requires a balance between obtaining essential vitamin D and preventing skin damage. While UVB radiation is necessary for bone and muscle health, excessive exposure increases the risk of sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer.
To treat existing sunburns, experts recommend using cold compresses, aloe vera gel, or applying cold yogurt to soothe inflammation. Internal hydration through water and antioxidant-rich foods is also vital for recovery. Once the acute redness subsides, natural oils like lavender or coconut oil can assist in skin regeneration.
Prevention strategies include wearing SPF 30 or higher, using hats and UV-protective sunglasses, and seeking shade during peak UV intensity. Individuals with darker skin tones may require longer exposure to produce vitamin D, while those with fair skin or a history of skin cancer should exercise heightened caution. Artificial UV sources, such as tanning beds, are not recommended alternatives for vitamin D supplementation.
