SUN Mobility launches EV battery-swapping network in Kenya

SUN Mobility, in partnership with Vivo Energy, has launched an open-architecture electric vehicle (EV) battery-swapping ecosystem in Kenya. This launch serves as a foundation for a broader expansion across the African continent.

Currently, 35 stations are operational in Nairobi and Mombasa. The network is designed to support various vehicle types, including electric motorcycles, scooters, passenger tuk-tuks, and cargo three-wheelers from over 10 different manufacturers. By utilizing an open architecture, the system allows multiple brands to operate on a shared network, removing the need for individual manufacturers to develop their own proprietary swapping infrastructure.

According to SUN Mobility, the solution aims to combat rising fuel costs by offering savings of 20% to 35% compared to petrol vehicles, depending on daily mileage. The company intends to provide fleet operators and financiers with greater stability by ensuring vehicles are supported by a reliable, independently operated energy network.
