Sun protection cannot be replaced by diet, experts warn
Health experts warn that dietary habits, such as consuming foods rich in beta-carotene like carrots or pumpkin, cannot replace physical sun protection. While high intake of these vegetables can cause carotenodermia—a purely aesthetic orange skin discoloration—it does not trigger a real tan or provide protection against ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
Medical professionals emphasize that relying on nutrition for sun protection creates a false sense of security, increasing the risk of severe burns, premature aging, and DNA damage. It is estimated that between 75% and 90% of melanoma cases are directly linked to UV radiation.
Solar radiation consists of infrared, visible light, and UV rays. UVA radiation penetrates deep into the dermis, contributing to photoaging and indirect DNA damage, while UVB radiation affects the epidermis, causing inflammation, burns, and direct skin cancer risks. A tan is a biological response where the skin produces melanin to absorb radiation, a process independent of nutritional intake.
