Sunair receives $2.08 million loan for regional aviation support

The New Zealand Government has announced a $2.08 million loan to Sunair, a Bay of Plenty-based airline, through the Regional Infrastructure Fund (RIF). The investment is intended to support regional air services and is part of a broader $30 million regional air connectivity package established in 2025.

Sunair will utilize the funds for the potential purchase of two new aircraft, essential fleet maintenance, and the refinancing of existing debt. The acquisition of larger aircraft is expected to increase passenger capacity and operational flexibility, reducing the airline's current reliance on six-seater planes.

Regional Development Minister Shane Jones stated that the loan provides relief in a difficult operating environment and helps enable business activity, tourism, and access to health and education services. Associate Transport Minister James Meager noted that the funding helps preserve vital routes in areas such as Northland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Coromandel, Tairāwhiti, and Hawke’s Bay, many of which are not served by larger operators.
