Severe sunburns linked to increased skin cancer risk
A meta-analysis published in JAMA Dermatology, involving over 321,000 individuals across 17 studies, indicates that a history of severe, painful, or blistering sunburns is linked to an increased risk of developing cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC).
Researchers found that individuals with a moderate frequency of such sunburns had a 51 percent higher relative risk of cSCC compared to those without such a history. For those with high frequencies, the risk increased by 69 percent. Notably, frequent severe sunburns during childhood were associated with approximately triple the risk of developing the disease later in life.
Medical experts note that while UV exposure is a known factor, the specific impact of sunburns stems from DNA damage in skin cells. When the body attempts to repair this damage, mutations can occur and accumulate over time. To manage immediate sunburn symptoms, experts recommend staying in cool environments, using soothing moisturizers like aloe vera, and staying hydrated, while avoiding home remedies like ice, oils, or toothpaste which can cause further irritation.
