Sunchon National University faces legal challenge over medical school selection
A legal and regional conflict has escalated in South Korea regarding the establishment of a national medical school in the Jeonnam region. Following the selection of Sunchon National University as the candidate institution, Mokpo National University has filed a lawsuit with the Gwangju District Court to cancel the selection and has requested a stay of execution.
Mokpo National University argues that the selection process was unfair, specifically contesting Sunchon National University’s plan to use city-owned land, which they claim fails to meet requirements for national university campus land. In contrast, the local integrated metropolitan government maintains the selection was valid based on comprehensive evaluations of faculty recruitment and facility plans.
The Sunchon Pharmacists Association has issued a statement urging the government to finalize the establishment of the medical school at Sunchon National University. They warned that prolonged litigation and delays could harm residents in the eastern Jeonnam region by delaying essential medical services and emergency care infrastructure.
