Suncor Energy posts Q2 profit rise as pipeline deal and carbon capture project take shape

Suncor Energy Inc. reported net earnings of $3.7 billion for the second quarter, up from $1.13 billion a year earlier, and adjusted operating earnings that beat analyst expectations. The stronger results were driven by higher realized crude prices and record‑setting refinery throughput and utilization, while upstream production fell short due to a planned maintenance shutdown at the Firebag oil‑sands facility.

CEO Rich Kruger said the mood in Canada toward the oil sector has improved, but it is still too early to gauge how the recent memorandum of understanding with the federal and Alberta governments will affect the company’s growth. The non‑binding MOU outlines shared ambitions on carbon policy, market access and fiscal conditions, and includes advancing the multibillion‑dollar Pathways carbon‑capture and storage project that underpins a new West Coast pipeline to a British Columbia tanker port.
