Sunda Blue Magpie population in West Java hits critical low

The population of the Sunda Blue Magpie (Cissa thalassina), an endemic bird species in West Java, has reached critical levels. Walhi Jawa Barat estimates that only 50 to 250 individuals remain in the wild.

According to M. Jefry Rohman, Manager of the Education Division at Walhi Jawa Barat, the birds have been observed in forest areas such as Mount Salak and Mount Gede Pangrango, though their limited numbers make observation increasingly difficult. The species faces severe threats from habitat destruction, deforestation, and illegal hunting.

To raise public awareness and promote conservation efforts, Walhi Jawa Barat is urging the government and the community to consider designating the Sunda Blue Magpie as an official regional mascot or icon for West Java. This move is intended to highlight the importance of preserving local habitats and maintaining ecological balance.
