Sunday Oliseh regrets ignoring NFF warnings regarding John Obi Mikel

Sunday Oliseh John Obi Mikel Nigeria Football Federation Super Eagles Victor Moses

Former Super Eagles head coach Sunday Oliseh has expressed regret for disregarding advice from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) during his tenure. The NFF had reportedly warned Oliseh against inviting John Obi Mikel, Vincent Enyeama, and Emmanuel Emenike to the national team, labeling the players as “chaotic” to the federation and the team system.

Oliseh detailed an attempt to establish a working relationship with the players by personally funding a trip from Belgium to London. He arranged a meeting at an accessible venue in central London with his assistant coach, inviting both Mikel and Victor Moses. While Moses attended the meeting and provided feedback, Oliseh stated that Mikel neither attended nor responded to his WhatsApp messages.

Oliseh described Mikel’s refusal to meet as “one of the biggest insults” he experienced as manager, suggesting the midfielder may have felt his status at a major club placed him above the authority of the national team coach. He emphasized that players must respect the office of the manager regardless of their individual playing careers.
