Sunderland AFC signs Malick Fofana from Lyon after deadline-day battle
Sunderland AFC secured the signing of 21-year-old Belgian winger Malick Fofana from Lyon on transfer deadline day following a competitive pursuit with Crystal Palace. Lyon sporting director Matthieu Louis-Jean revealed that the club had to intervene directly to help Fofana reach a decision as the transfer window drew to a close.
During the final hours, both Sunderland and Crystal Palace were in contention for the player, with both clubs reportedly arranging joint medicals and private jets. Sunderland ultimately won the race by offering favorable terms to Lyon and higher commissions to the player’s agent.
Addressing concerns regarding Fofana’s previous ankle injury that sidelined him for much of last season, Sunderland director of football Florent Ghisolfi stated there are “no issue” regarding the player's physical or mental fitness. Ghisolfi described Fofana as a “top kid” and noted that the club had thoroughly vetted his personality and mentality before the move. Fofana has already begun integrating into the squad, making his debut as a substitute against Brentford and starting in a recent League Cup match against Hull City.
