Sunderland defeats AZ Alkmaar in historic Europa League return

Sunderland AFC secured a historic 1-0 victory over AZ Alkmaar in their UEFA Europa League opener, marking the club’s first appearance in European competition in 53 years.

In a match held at the Stadium of Light, the decisive moment arrived in the 66th minute when Enzo Le Fée converted a penalty after being fouled by Weslley Patati. Sunderland dominated much of the first half, with Le Fée hitting the post, while AZ Alkmaar improved their performance in the second half. Despite several chances for the Dutch side, including efforts by Kees Smit and Mexx Meerdink, Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs made crucial saves to maintain the clean sheet.

Following the match, AZ Alkmaar manager Leeroy Echteld expressed frustration over the penalty, stating, “That is not something you should do,” while noting that his team was the better side in the second half. Sunderland’s victory ends a long absence from the continental stage, their last European fixture having taken place in 1973.
