Sunderland defeats Hull City to advance in EFL Cup

Despite the loss, Hull City manager Sergej Jakirović noted that the team defended well throughout the match. Jakirović also expressed frustration regarding a denied penalty appeal involving Robin Vaz and Luke O’Nien, noting that the absence of VAR in this stage of the competition impacted the decision.

For Sunderland, the match marked a successful return for Talbi, who had recently been the subject of transfer speculation regarding the Saudi Pro League. Manager Regis Le Bris expressed satisfaction with the squad's depth after fielding 11 changes from the previous match.
