Sunfire technology enables industrial green hydrogen production in Finland

Finland has commenced industrial-scale production of green hydrogen in Harjavalta using a 20-megawatt pressure alkali electrolyzer supplied by the German company Sunfire. The facility, operated by P2X Solutions, was officially inaugurated in the presence of Finnish President Alexander Stubb. Sunfire CEO Nils Aldag noted that the project highlights the potential for electrolyzers to become a significant German export as hydrogen demand rises.

Separately, a study by the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy Systems (IEE) suggests that expanding electrolyzer capacity in neighboring countries could impact German electricity prices. The research, commissioned by IHK Flensburg, modeled the effects of additional capacity in Austria and western Denmark by 2030. The findings indicate that these border-adjacent facilities could absorb surplus renewable energy during low-price periods, potentially reducing the availability of cheap imports and moderately increasing average electricity prices in Germany.
