Sungai Merbok mangrove forest faces ongoing plastic waste dumping

The Penang Consumers Association (CAP) has called for urgent investigation and enforcement action regarding ongoing waste dumping in the Sungai Merbok Mangrove Permanent Reserved Forest in Kedah. The association reported that plastic waste, including bags and bottles, has been accumulating at two locations in Kampung Segantang Garam.

CAP President Mohideen Abdul Kader noted that this issue has persisted for four years despite previous reports to the authorities. He expressed concern that the pollution could damage the river ecosystem, spread to coastal areas, and threaten the livelihoods of hundreds of local fishermen.

To address the problem, CAP is urging the Sungai Petani Municipal Council (MPSPK) and the Kedah State Forestry Department to increase monitoring, provide adequate trash bins, and install more warning signs. The association also recommended government-led awareness campaigns regarding the environmental impact of plastic waste.
