Sungai Perak water quality remains Class II despite blue discoloration

Authorities in Perak are addressing concerns regarding the blue discoloration of the Sungai Perak river. Environmental scientist Dr. Abdul Rani Abdullah confirmed that water samples remain within Malaysia’s Class II Water Quality Index, meaning the water is suitable for public use such as recreation, fisheries, and as raw water for conventional treatment, though it must not be consumed directly without processing.

The Department of Mineral and Geoscience (JMG) Perak emphasized that mining companies are strictly regulated under the Mineral Development Act 1994. Mining operations are required to use closed-loop systems, and any wastewater released into rivers must undergo treatment to manage low pH levels and high metal content.

To identify the exact causes of changing water quality and increased mineral levels in Sungai Rui, the Department of Environment (JAS) Perak has proposed a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) study. This study aims to map all potential sources of pollution along the river, including mining activities and other agencies, to provide technical data for state government decision-making. This approach seeks to avoid attributing changes to a single source without comprehensive evidence.
