Part of situation: The Simpsons character Apu reintroduction (2 clusters)

Apu returns to The Simpsons with new voice actor Sunil Malhotra

The Simpsons has brought back the character Apu Nahasapeemapetilon with dialogue for the first time in nearly a decade. In the Season 38 Halloween special, ‘The Revengening’, Apu returns with a new voice provided by Sunil Malhotra.

This casting change follows years of controversy regarding racial stereotypes. The character had been largely silent since 2017, following criticism from comedian Hari Kondabolu in the documentary ‘The Problem With Apu’, which highlighted the impact of the character's South Asian caricature. Long-time voice actor Hank Azaria, who voiced Apu for 29 seasons, stepped down from the role in 2020 after the show adopted a policy of casting diverse actors for non-white characters.

The episode features a plot where Apu, appearing as a masked figure, confronts the residents of Springfield for having ignored him. The return also includes the reappearance of his wife, Manjula, now voiced by Janina Gavankar. Executive producer Matt Selman stated the goal was to bring the character back in a way that allowed him to evolve and acknowledge past mistakes.
