Sun‑Induced Hair Damage: How UV Rays Harm Hair and Ways to Protect It
Dermatologist Wilma Bergfeld explains that prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation can strip moisture from hair, weaken its structure, and fade colour, leaving strands dry, brittle and prone to split ends. Signs of sun‑damaged hair include rapid drying after washing, loss of curl definition and a straw‑like texture. The effects are more pronounced on fine, light‑coloured or bleached hair, while darker hair benefits from natural pigments and oils. To prevent damage, Bergfeld recommends limiting time in intense midday sun, using UV‑protective sprays or leave‑in products, wearing hats, and keeping the scalp protected with sunscreen of at least SPF 30. She also advises gentle hair care routines, adequate nutrition, and rinsing chlorine after swimming, as chlorinated water can increase susceptibility to UV‑related harm.
