Sunlight Enables Quantum Entanglement in New Study
Researchers have shown that entangled photon pairs can be generated directly from sunlight using a cone‑shaped solar concentrator. The sunlight‑driven setup produced Bell‑test‑verified entanglement with quality scores comparable to traditional laser‑based systems.
The work combined theoretical advances from Robert Boyd’s team at the University of Ottawa with a solar concentrator developed by Hanieh Fattahi’s group at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light. Lead author Cheng Li said the approach could make quantum communication, sensing and computing more energy‑efficient, enabling satellites or remote stations to create secure encryption keys without power‑hungry lasers. The current prototype still relies on electricity for temperature control and sun tracking, but further engineering may reduce those needs.
