Sunlight exposure linked to lower diabetes risk and blood glucose

A study published in the journal ‘Scientific Reports’ has found that sunlight exposure is associated with lower blood glucose levels and a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes.

Researchers from the University of Edinburgh and the Karolinska Institute utilized data from the UK Biobank to examine the relationship between acute and chronic sunlight exposure and metabolic health. While previous studies have linked low vitamin D levels to diabetes risk, current clinical trials have not definitively established vitamin D supplementation as a preventative measure for the general population.

The research suggests that sunlight may provide cardiovascular and metabolic benefits through mechanisms independent of vitamin D, such as the activation of nitric oxide in the skin via ultraviolet radiation, which can aid in vasodilation and blood pressure reduction.
