Sunny Hostin claims she was lone holdout in 1991 cannibalism trial
Sunny Hostin, co-host of ‘The View’, recently claimed on-air that she was the lone holdout juror in the 1991 trial of Daniel Rakowitz, known as the ‘Butcher of Tompkins Square Park’. Hostin stated that she successfully persuaded the rest of the jury to reach a unanimous verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity, arguing that Rakowitz was in a state of psychosis during the murder of Monika Beerle.
However, contemporaneous reports from 1991 contradict Hostin’s account. Media outlets including The New York Post, Newsday, and the Associated Press reported at the time that the holdout juror was an unemployed man who sought to prolong deliberations to continue receiving court-provided meals and daily pay. Juror Valerie Holmes specifically described the individual as a manipulative man who was determined to reach an insanity verdict for those reasons.
