Suno pulls unauthorized Mary J. Blige advertisement
AI music generation platform Suno has terminated an advertising campaign featuring R&B singer Mary J. Blige after discovering the singer had not approved the content. The campaign, which appeared on social media, featured an 85-second video of Blige in a recording studio observing a producer use Suno to generate a track. In the footage, Blige appeared to offer suggestions and expressed being impressed by the results.
A Suno spokesperson stated that the company had entered into a business deal with an individual who presented themselves as Blige’s official representative. Upon learning that this was not the case and that the singer was uncomfortable, the company pulled the advertisement.
The incident follows significant online backlash regarding the use of the singer's likeness to endorse AI technology. This controversy occurs amid ongoing legal tensions between AI music platforms and the music industry; Suno and Udio are currently facing lawsuits from major labels, including Sony Music, Universal Music Group, and Warner Records.
