Sunrise Energy Metals secures $400M US funding for Australian scandium project
Sunrise Energy Metals has secured a conditional commitment for up to $400 million in debt financing from the U.S. Department of Defense's Office of Strategic Capital (OSC). The 25-year debt facility is intended to fund the development of the Syerston Scandium Project in New South Wales, Australia.
The Syerston project is positioned to become the world's first primary scandium mine. Scandium is a critical mineral used to strengthen aluminum for aerospace, defense, and artificial intelligence infrastructure. The financing aims to establish a Western supply chain for the metal, reducing reliance on China, which currently dominates global rare earth mining and processing.
As part of the agreement, the U.S. government will receive a right of first offer on the project's production. In response to the news, Sunrise Energy Metals' shares saw significant gains on the Australian Securities Exchange, at one point rising by 29%. The company is also preparing for a potential listing on a U.S. securities exchange to access broader capital markets.
