Sunsari district curfew extended after deadly communal clash
On July 28, police opened fire in Dewanganj Rural Municipality‑3 (Kaptanganj) in Nepal's Sunsari district during a clash between Hindu and Muslim groups over loudspeaker use and religious flags. The shooting killed 24‑year‑old Om Prakash Mehta and injured at least 24 others, including civilians, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnel.
The district administration imposed an indefinite curfew and prohibitory orders in five market areas, banning gatherings of more than four people, rallies and public meetings. The curfew was later extended to additional localities such as Harinagar, Dewanganj, Itahari (wards 16‑17) and others, with restrictions from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and intermittent lifts on the East‑West Highway.
In response, the government formed a five‑member probe panel chaired by Joint Secretary Bhupendra Thapa and reshuffled key security officials who were on leave during the incident, transferring the Sunsari police chief, APF chief and provincial police DIG to new posts. Prime Minister Balendra Shah pledged strict action, expressed condolences, and ordered free medical treatment for the injured. Protesters also looted and set fire to shops in the Koshi river belt, blocking the highway with burned tires.
