Dermatologists Warn of “Tanmaxxing” Social Media Tanning Trend
The viral social‑media phenomenon “tanmaxxing” – a blend of “tan” and “maxxing” – encourages users to achieve an extremely deep tan by prolonged sun exposure, use of tanning beds, UV‑intensifying oils and often skipping sunscreen. The trend, popular across platforms in multiple countries, has been highlighted by dermatologists as a serious health concern.
Experts such as Dr. Silvina Pugliese of NYU Langone Health and Dr. Rachel Nazarian describe the practice as “sun damage packaged as a beauty hack” that raises the risk of skin‑cancer, accelerates premature aging, and causes DNA damage. They note that even moderate sunburns can double cancer risk. Authorities recommend using broad‑spectrum SPF 30 + sunscreen, reapplying every two hours, avoiding peak UV hours (10:00‑14:00), wearing protective clothing, and limiting tanning‑bed use.
The warning has been reported in Romania, India and other regions, underscoring the global reach of the trend and the need for public‑health awareness.
