Sunscreen Effectiveness Study and Stick Formulation Review Offer New Guidance

Researchers at the Universidad del Gran Rosario in Villa María presented a study showing that selecting a sunscreen should go beyond the SPF number. The work recommends evaluating the product’s ingredient profile, UVA/UVB coverage, photo‑stability, systemic absorption, and safety risks such as endocrine disruption, and tailoring recommendations to skin type, barrier condition and exposure context.

An analysis by the Organización de Consumidores y Usuarios (OCU) examined three SPF 50 stick sunscreens. Tests confirmed that the sticks provide protection comparable to cream sunscreens, but they can cost up to five times more per unit and are harder to apply evenly, risking missed spots. The OCU also noted labeling challenges on the small packaging and limited ingredient information.

Together, the research and consumer test underline the need for informed choices: professionals should assess scientific criteria when advising users, while consumers should weigh cost, ease of use and labeling clarity when selecting stick‑type sunscreens.
