Sunscreen Linked to Higher Skin Cancer Risk as Croatia Holds Free Skin Checks

A large observational study of more than 470,000 participants published in JAMA found that regular use of sunscreen was associated with markedly increased odds of the main types of skin cancer, including a 292 % higher risk of invasive melanoma and a 258 % higher risk of melanoma in situ. The researchers noted that chemicals such as avobenzone, oxybenzone and octocrylene can be absorbed into the bloodstream, raising concerns about long‑term safety.

In parallel, a free skin‑cancer screening event organized by retailer dm in Poreč, Croatia, examined 122 people. Dermatologists referred 31 individuals for further investigations, emphasizing early detection and year‑round sun‑protection habits.
