Sunscreen pollution poses threat to marine environments

A study conducted by the Plymouth Marine Laboratory and the University of Plymouth reveals that over 55% of people are unaware that sunscreen ingredients can harm the marine environment. Ultraviolet (UV) filters from sun protection products enter oceans through swimming, water-based recreation, and wastewater from showering or washing clothes.

Research indicates that organic UV filters have been detected in 95% of wastewater effluents and 86% of surface waters globally, including remote regions like the Arctic and Antarctica. These compounds can negatively impact marine life, including fish, algae, and coral reefs. Additionally, the study notes that while many products are marketed as ‘reef-safe’, the market remains unregulated, and many such labels do not significantly reduce environmental harm.
