Sunscreen SPF examined for skin health and coral reef protection
Chemical filters used in many conventional sunscreens, such as oxybenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene and homosalate, can wash off the skin during swimming and enter marine ecosystems. Studies show they cause coral bleaching, DNA damage and reproductive disruption even at low concentrations, prompting several tourist destinations—including Hawaii, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Palau, parts of Mexico and Thailand—to impose bans or restrictions on the sale and use of such products. Experts recommend mineral‑based filters, primarily zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which act as a physical barrier and are considered less harmful to reefs.
From a health perspective, broad‑spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen is advised to reduce the risk of UV‑induced skin damage and melanoma. Proper application requires about 30 ml for the body and a generous amount for the face, applied 15–30 minutes before sun exposure and reapplied every two hours or after swimming. Misuse—such as applying insufficient quantity, using expired products, or relying on a false sense of safety—can diminish protection and increase cancer risk.
