Sunshine Coast beach artillery shell destroyed in controlled blast

An unexploded 11-kilogram World War II artillery shell was discovered at the base of a dune on Wurtulla Beach on the Sunshine Coast. The object, identified as a 25-pound high-explosive projectile, was found by a pedestrian walking a dog near midnight on Saturday.

Queensland Police secured the site until specialists from the Australian Defence Force’s Joint Explosive Ordnance Support South Queensland team arrived. Bomb disposal personnel conducted a controlled destruction of the shell at approximately 4 am on Sunday. The resulting blast was loud enough to wake residents in nearby suburbs, though no injuries were reported.

The area north of Caloundra served as an artillery range for Australian and Allied forces between 1939 and 1944.
