Sunshine, Victoria shop owner’s death fuels bail reform calls
Van Viet Truong, the long‑time owner of Hong Hung Asian Grocery in Sunshine, Victoria, died in hospital after being attacked by five teenagers who were stealing clothing. Truong had intervened to stop the theft, and police later upgraded one teen’s charge to manslaughter while three were granted bail and a fifth had charges dropped.
The incident has sparked community outrage, with a handwritten sign reading “No more bail for killers” displayed on the shop’s roller door. Sunshine Business Association president Vu Du said traders are angry and seeking change. Politicians—including Laverton MP Sarah Connolly, federal member Daniel Mulino, Police Minister Paul Edbrooke and newly appointed Premier Ben Carroll—met with local traders to discuss safety and bail policy, while the community hopes the tragedy will lead to stronger support for the suburb.
