SUNY Orange students excavate mastodon remains in Orange County

Students from SUNY Orange and researchers from the New York State Museum are continuing the excavation of a mastodon discovered in an Orange County, New York, backyard. The ongoing dig has uncovered approximately 11 ribs, at least three vertebrae, and bones from the feet.

The discovery began in 2024 after a local homeowner brought unusual objects found on their property to SUNY Orange. This summer marked the second Archaeological Field Experience at the site, providing hands-on learning for students across various academic disciplines. The college is currently preparing to involve student volunteers in the cleaning and conservation of the rare remains.
