Sunyani to receive new 40,000-seat FIFA-standard stadium

President John Dramani Mahama is scheduled to break ground in October 2026 for the construction of a 40,000-seat, FIFA-standard stadium in Sunyani. The project is part of a broader national initiative to decentralize and rebuild Ghana’s sporting infrastructure across multiple regions, including the Oti, Western North, Ahafo, and Savannah regions.

The new multipurpose facility will be situated on a 35-acre plot at Old Abesim. In addition to football, the arena is designed to host athletics, volleyball, basketball, and other sports. The project is expected to be completed by 2029.

To ensure local sports activities continue during construction, authorities plan to simultaneously renovate and maintain the existing Coronation Park. The development is expected to provide a boost to the local economy in the Bono Region by stimulating business in the hospitality and transport sectors.
