Super El Nino to alter Malaysia's monsoon patterns and water security

The upcoming Super El Nino phenomenon is expected to alter the timing of the Northeast Monsoon in Malaysia, potentially causing it to arrive earlier and depart later than the typical October to March window. Experts note that while the Super El Nino, expected to form between November and December, may reduce overall rainfall and lower the risk of massive flooding, it introduces other significant concerns.

Dr. Chung Jing Xiang, a senior lecturer at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, warns that reduced rainfall could impact water levels in the nation's major dams. While the monsoon season is a vital source for replenishing reservoirs, a prolonged period of low rainfall could lead to water supply pressures during the dry season.

Meteorological indicators of the monsoon include sustained strong winds from the northeast and cold air from Siberia entering the South China Sea, which may bring heavy rain to the East Coast, eastern Johor, Sabah, and Sarawak. Additionally, increased wind speeds may lead to rougher sea conditions and rising sea levels in the South China Sea.
